The application of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can be as controversial as it is in-demand.  Adherents to Marsha Linehan’s Standard DBT model insist that her research findings be adopted while innovators in DBT take a broader perspective on research evidence that favors adaptations.

The resulting schism has created debate on whether DBT is restricted to Linehan’s researched model or if it can be widely disseminated and used like other theoretical orientations.   For some, the polarized views on DBT go directly to the questions:

  • What is DBT?
  • Who can market themselves as DBT therapists?
  • Who makes those decisions?
  • Whose evidence determines those answers?

Join Dr. Stephanie Vaughn and Dr. Lane Pederson for an in-depth presentation of the issues surrounding DBT and its clinical applications.  With expert clinicians for each side of the discussion, this webcast promises a dialectical synthesis of research and practice that will have practical considerations for how you apply DBT.

Innovations in DBT with Lane Pederson, PsyD

Who owns DBT?

DBT is an efficacious, and effective, therapy

  • The Standard Model works
  • Adaptations work

DBT research

  • Are randomized clinical trials a “gold standard”?
  • DBT compared to other bona fide treatment models
  • What’s new is not effective, and what’s effective is not new

What affects outcomes?  The known sources of variance in change

  • Extra-therapeutic factors
  • The therapeutic alliance
  • Therapist factors
  • Therapy model delivered: belief, expectancy, and allegiance
  • Specific ingredients: necessary, but only as a component of the healing context
  • Therapy is contextual, not medical

Where’s the beef?  The science on adherence

  • Virtually no evidence to support (high) adherence
  • High (and low) adherence can be iatrogenic
  • Coherence important, as predicted by the contextual model
  • Virtually no empirical evidence that treatment fidelity improves outcomes

To the rescue: Evidence-based practice

  • The evolution from empirically-supported treatments to evidence-based practice
  • APA policy on evidenced-based practice
  • Standard DBT: State of the art or relic?
  • Practice-based outcomes

Linehan, Freud, and the evolution of therapies

OBJECTIVES

  • Identify the treatment modes and functions of Standard DBT
  • Describe the differences between Evidence-Based Treatments (EBTs) and Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs)
  • List at least 2 reasons for adopting Standard DBT and at least 2 reasons for adapting DBT
