Description

  • 4 ways the new DSM-5® can help you improve & provide even better treatment
  • 5 easy-to-use assessment tools for tracking and reporting client progress
  • How 6 of the most commonly applied diagnoses have been transformed in DSM-5® and why

DSM-5 ® incorporates up-to-date research, and seeks to use that research to increase validity and specificity of diagnosis, resulting in many changes that will affect your practice. While diagnosis is still done in a categorical manner, this DSM attempts to better reflect the dimensionality of psychological symptoms. It adds 15 new diagnoses (e.g., Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder; Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder for children; Cannabis Withdrawal), eliminates others (e.g., Dysthymia), and revises criteria for many other disorders (e.g., no more “bereavement exclusion” for diagnosing major depression). Additionally, there is a vastly expanded and specific list of V-codes. DSM-5® also encourages standardization of assessment across researchers and clinicians via the inclusion of both cross-cutting assessments (assessing key realms of client functioning, no matter the diagnosis) and dimensional ratings for most diagnostic criteria.

During this program, case vignettes will be used to illustrate changes in diagnostic coding from DSM-IV® to DSM-5® /ICD-10-CM. The workshop will also provide practice with several new DSM-5® assessment measures and illustrate how they can easily be incorporated into your practice, as well as show how treatment effectiveness can be improved by using standardized assessments. Insurers are increasingly likely to require standardized measures, so knowing which ones to use and how to incorporate them into your treatment plan can help reduce the number of reimbursement objections you and your clients encounter.
