In this 32-hour Series 200 (consisting of four 8-hour courses), we discuss how to use the mindsight approach in the assessment, treatment planning and intervention phases of clinical work. We’ll also explore how these interpersonal neurobiology principles of health and growth can be applied outside the formal therapeutic setting to cultivate more compassion and well-being in our school curriculum, our companies and our communities. By assessing for chaos and rigidity in the clinical evaluation, we can find areas of functioning that are not integrated. Dr. Siegel will offer immersive examples that illustrate with greater detail and the many concepts in his various clinically related texts. You will learn how to design and apply clinical interventions which promote integration—the linkage of differentiated parts of a system—within the 9 domains of integration (Integration of Consciousness, Vertical Integration, Bilateral Integration, Integration of Memory, Narrative Integration, State Integration, Temporal Integration, Interpersonal Integration, and Transpirational Integration). You will also learn how integration is created within the attuned therapeutic relationship and how specific treatment strategies catalyze integration in individuals and relationships. The course weaves the principles of neuroplasticity with their application to therapeutic interventions. For a detailed description of the four courses that comprise Series 200, please see below.
MOL 201 - Clinical Assessment
The first stage of clinical work is to evaluate what is happening in a person or relationship’s life. IPNB offers a new approach to this assessment. In this course you’ll experience directly how to evaluate clients/patients using fundamental concepts from IPNB. You’ll learn how to identify chaos and rigidity in the clinical evaluation. We’ll re-examine the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders through an interpersonal neurobiology (“IPNB”) lens and discover the each symptom of each syndrome can be viewed as an example of chaos, rigidity, or both. With this assessment, we then aim our clinical thinking to uncover which domains of integration may be impaired in chaos and rigidity and then chart strategies for intervention for identifying the impaired domains of integration.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
MOL 202 - Treatment Planning
Once we’ve done an assessment, we then will focus on how to plan treatment. Here, you’ll learn how to design interventions to help promote differentiation and linkage within the domains of integration and find where differentiation and linkage may be impaired. You’ll see how to identify the domain of integration that is not developed in a given individual, couple or family’s life and then choose an effective treatment strategy with the assistance of the domains, ranging from the integration of consciousness to interpersonal integration. We’ll also consider the development of the mind as an embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information and apply that view to how the mind develops across the lifespan.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
MOL 203 - Therapeutic Interventions
IPNB principles have direct application to what is actually done in therapy. In this course, you’ll learn how stimulating neuronal activation and growth can promote integration across the identified domains. You’ll also gain an understanding of the IPNB view that for any therapy to be effective, it must change the brain and how “SNAG” denotes the fundamental approach used to stimulate neuronal activation and growth. In the background of these specific strategies, we’ll explore the power of the presence of the therapist to promote neural integration and review the principles of neuroplasticity and how to apply them to the implementation of therapeutic interventions. Examples will be provided to help us explore how a therapist actually stays “present” in therapy while simultaneously keeping an eye on the movement of the individual toward integration.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
MOL 204 - Beyond the Therapy Suite
How we catalyze change moves us beyond the formal setting of therapy into other settings. In this final course in Series 200, you’ll learn about IPNB in the family room, the classroom, and the board room. You’ll hear why bringing health into families, schools, communities and organizations is a central goal of interpersonal neurobiology. The opportunity we as mental health professionals have to not only define the mind, but also to illuminate the nature of a healthy mind will be explored as we extend this work out into the community to create a larger impact. Come join us as we explore how to apply the basic IPNB principles of SNAGging the brain toward integration in ways that can have a positive ripple effect in creating well-being in our individual and collective lives!
