This workshop will introduce clinicians to the Unified Protocol for the Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children: Emotion Detectives (UP-C:ED). This protocol is for use with children ages 6-13 who have a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder, a depressive disorder, or both. Research shows this treatment to be particularly appropriate for youth with comorbid emotional disorders. Unlike traditional psychosocial treatments for children that are designed to target symptoms of particular disorders or classes of disorders, the UP-C: ED delivers skills through an emotion-focused framework utilizing an array of personally-relevant positive and negative emotion targets. Its developmentally-sensitive, fun group environment further enhances intervention uptake by enhancing rapport and group cohesion.
Psychopharmacologic treatments such as SSRIs have the advantage of addressing symptom convergence across emotional disorders, but psychosocial interventions have lagged behind. The UP-C: ED and its companion protocol for adolescents, the UP-A, represent a treatment advance as an alternative or adjunctive psychosocial treatment for children with varying emotional disorder profiles. This workshop will provide an overview of the structure of the protocol using didactic instruction, interactive role plays, and video demonstrations. The rationale for a transdiagnostic, emotion-focused treatment approach, and preliminary results from ongoing research will be compared to an existent, evidence-based treatment for anxiety in youth and presented. Participants will be exposed to the components of the UP-C: ED and its concurrent parent group and, through role plays and demonstrations, will learn about the core therapeutic principles and skills utilized. Skills presented will include emotion identification and awareness, building motivation, flexible thinking, and experiential and behavioral exposure.
