Expand your therapeutic toolbox with these new skills:
For many of the older adults you see in your practice, growing older seems to involve an inevitable loss of strength, energy, and vitality. You feel helpless and frustrated as you watch your older patients suffer from a loss of muscle mass and subsequent weakness, knowing these things predispose them to increased risk for injury. You want to see your patients increase their functional capacity, maintain their independence, and decrease their co-morbidities. But what can you do in therapy to help your patients help themselves live a better, more independent life? Get them on a strength training routine!
Strength training for this population has been proven to improve muscle strength and coordination, helping to maintain functional capacity and independence. By including the appropriate strength training programs in your therapy plan, you can reverse and prevent decreases in strength and energy your patients are experiencing, helping to avoid the onset of gravity associated with aging.
Karyn Gallivan, MS, ATC, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, NASM-CPT, has implemented strength training for older adults into her practice, and wants to share her strategies and outcomes with you. Through case studies and hands-on activities, you will learn strategies to easily design safe and effective strength programs for every adult, even those with orthopedic and metabolic diseases. Get the information you need to help the most challenging patients - those patients with co-morbidities - successfully reach new levels of strength and vitality. Reduce the symptoms of metabolic diseases and arthritis in your patients through strength training, and keep your patients in their homes!

Karyn Gallivan, MS, ATC, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, is a certified athletic trainer with over 25 years of experience in education, clinical rehabilitation, strength & conditioning and post-rehab training of patients with metabolic and orthopedic conditions. With training in cardiovascular and exercise physiology, Karyn works with a team of health professionals to provide individualized exercise programming and lifestyle change programs for cardiac rehab patients, as well as personal fitness training. Very often the key to success for cardiac rehab patients is addressing the challenges (and co-morbidities) that each patients presents with. In this regard, much of her time is spent addressing these challenges through all phases of the rehab process –including addressing co-morbidities with the patient and their family. Karyn works to train and educate the whole person using a balanced approach to design safe and effective programs that will strengthen "weak links" and lead to an enhanced level of health and fitness.
With international speaking experience, Karyn also spends much of her time teaching exercise physiology and rehabilitation to our future health professionals. She has completed doctoral studies in exercise physiology and educational leadership, and is a PhD Student–concentrating on strategies to bridge the gap between health care and the level of patient commitment, and long-term compliance that is necessary for these interventions to be successful. Karyn is delighted to share valuable insights she has collected from her vast experiences working with patients throughout all phases of cardiac rehabilitation.
