Christina Strayer Thornton, EdD, LPC, CCTP, AAT Related seminars and products


Christina Strayer Thornton, Ed.D, LPC, CCTP, AAT, is a licensed practicing counselor with three therapy dogs of her own. Dr. Strayer Thornton and her canine co-therapists work with individuals with trauma, ADHD, autism, PTSD and many others. Her therapy animals are rescues who have experienced trauma and Dr. Strayer Thornton uses their stories to provide hope to clients. She is writing a treatment manual pairing Adlerian Techniques with AAT. Dr. Strayer Thornton obtained her Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University, Sarasota, FL. Her dissertation work was based on Animal-Assisted Therapy and the benefits to at risk youth. Dr. Strayer Thornton works as an adjunct professor at Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC.

Dr. Strayer Thornton obtained her Certified Counselor in Trauma Procedures (CCTP) from the International Association of Trauma and her Master’s degree in Counseling and Human Development with a concentration in School Counseling K-12 from Radford University, Radford, VA. While there, she presented research on the benefits of AAT for Exceptional Children for a graduate forum. Dr. Strayer Thornton has a background in special education and taught 6th-7th grade Special Education with the Carroll County Public School System, Carroll County, VA. Dr. Strayer Thornton worked with all types of populations in her work as an elementary school counselor for 12 years as well. While employed as a school counselor, she obtained her National Board Certified Teacher certification (NBCT) with a concentration in Early Childhood through Young Adulthood. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking with her co-therapists, cooking, kayaking and volunteering in her community.
