Description

“Look at me when I am talking with you.” In some cultures, this behavior is considered disrespectful, especially when talking to one in authority or an elder.  We learn the nuances of acceptable and respectful conversation from our families. Do they match those of our patients or our colleagues? If not, what do we need to do?

In this 60-minute webinar, we will examine the communication styles of various ethnic groups, including the use of silence, eye contact and touch. These are essential tools that an interpreter employs while “translating the language.”

Communication is not complete until the “time orientation” component is considered. We will review past, present & future time orientations and discuss their implications when developing a plan of care.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this self-study package, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the cultural nuances of verbal and non-verbal communication.
  2. List ways to enhance communication through the use of neurolinguistic coding.
  3. Discuss the influence of time orientation in communication.

Program Outline:

    1. Verbal and non-verbal
      1. A cultural perspective
    2. Neurolinguistic coding
      1. Getting the message across
    3. Techniques to enhance interaction
      1. What is my patient and/or colleague really saying?
    4. The indispensable attributes of interpreters
    5. Time is of the essence, or is it?
