Module 4 will address a wide range of factors that contribute to how children and adolescents experience and internalize traumatic events. The roles of both healthy and maladaptive coping strategies employed by traumatized children and adolescents will be examined. The concepts of counterfactual thinking, self-blame, and meaning-making will be explored as methods of developing stabilization and adopting healthier coping tactics. Theories of cognitive restructuring and reframing will be considered for their effectiveness and facilitation of posttraumatic growth.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Consider the concepts of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies adopted by traumatized children and adolescents, and the significant role they play in the symptomology and treatment of posttraumatic stress.
  2. Simulate a working knowledge of how the emerging trends of counterfactual thinking, self-blame, meaning-making, cognitive restructuring, and reframing facilitate the process of posttraumatic growth and positive therapeutic outcomes.
