In this module, you'll gain foundational insight into trauma's lasting impact on the body and brain. Janina will guide you in exploring:

  • How to identify and understand post-traumatic triggers and symptoms that develop due to dysregulation.
  • How to apply specific, practical techniques from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, mindful awareness and other neurobiologically informed treatment strategies.
  • How to help your client restore brain functioning and regulate their nervous system.

In module two, you'll develop a full comprehension of why trauma clients often resort to harmful, addictive behaviors, including substance abuse, cutting, eating disorders, suicide ideation, and more. In this module, you'll get access to:

  • An integrated trauma-wise treatment strategy to help clients overcome harmful behavior.
  • Proven strategies to address the complications that arise, due to abstinence and sobriety.
  • Practical worksheets, handouts, and exercises that you can immediately use with your clients.

In module three, Janina will guide you through the latest neuroscience into how trauma encodes itself in our memories and continues to wreak havoc on clients through responses such as overwhelming emotions, involuntary shaking, and out-of-control movements. You'll get access to:

  • Step-by-step explanations of today's most effective methods to work with traumatic memory.
  • Proven treatments plans that will teach you exactly what to ask and what to say when helping your clients process and resolve traumatic memories.

Addressing traumatic attachment is a prerequisite to effective trauma treatment, but it's challenging to repair wounds that have lasted for years, and possibly even generations. In this module, Janina will provide you with easy-to-follow illustrations and examples so you can learn:

  • How to identify different attachment disorders and specifically what to do to treat them.
  • How to effectively work with your client so you can avoid becoming an attachment trigger.

In this module, you'll master strategies to work with the dissociation that so often results from a traumatic experience. You'll get access to:

  • Step by step instruction on how to implement the revolutionary Internal Family Systems "parts" approach within your therapeutic work to resolve your client's inner, emotional conflicts and heal past wounds.
  • Practical exercises that you can immediately use with your clients.

Shame, fear, and anger are powerful emotions that can take control of your client's life. In this module, you'll get access to:

  • Effective methods of using parts work, psychoeducation, somatic and mindfulness-based interventions to change your client's relationship with these emotions.
  • Easy-to-follow case studies and moment-to-moment illustrations so you can help your clients to take back control of their lives.

Part II - Coming to Your Senses: Recovering from Trauma by Learning to Safely Inhabit Your Body with Bessel van der Kolk

"Dr. van der Kolk's work unites the evolving neuroscience of trauma research with an emergent wave of body-oriented therapies and traditional mind/body practices that go beyond symptom relief and connect us with our vital energy and here-and-now presence."
—Peter A. Levine, PhD, developer of Somatic Experiencing

To change the brain, we have to change the body. We can bring our clients in synch with their lives today, to feel alive and here in the present moment.

How? By teaching clients to safely live in their bodies.

Click here for course objectives and outline

In this module, you'll help numb, disconnected clients slowly 'befriend' their bodies, so they become more aware of the sensations and responses that keep them 'stuck' in the trauma. Plus:

  • Articulate ways to restore proper balance between the rational and emotional brains, that can help clients re-establish ownership of their bodies and minds.
  • Propose methods that re-establish connection and synchrony with others to overcome trauma.

Bessel van der Kolk interviews two pioneers in the field of trauma, dissociation, and attachment— Onno van der Hart, Ph.D., a world-renowned expert who has written extensively on understanding and treating chronic traumatic stress and helped guide trauma treatment worldwide, and Frank Putnam, MD., who Bessel calls "without question one of the world's foremost scientists in the field of trauma, dissociation and attachment."

With case studies to illustrate the reality of dissociation, and enriching commentary, you'll enhance your understanding of the clinical presentation of dissociation and trauma and the challenges of treatment.

In this module, listen as these two trauma-treatment titans:

  • Critique the DSM's categorization of PTSD as an anxiety disorder versus Dissociative Identity Order.
  • Explore how the work of Pierre Janet is relevant for current therapy models in evaluating trauma.
  • Discuss the nature of evidence-based treatments relative to trauma and the possibility of retraumatizing the client.

Get a front-row seat to this intimate interview, as Frank Putnam, MD, dives into his remarkable research. You'll hear first-hand about his dutiful and passionate studies on sexual abuse, transgenerational trauma, and dissociation and multiple personality disorders (DID).

This module will also:

  • Specify treatment methods that induce a state of change in the trauma client.
  • Provide psychoeducation on Dissociative Identity Disorder to improve client understanding of the disorder and the rationale of treatment methods used.
  • Articulate clinical strategies to assist the client out of their dissociative state and return their awareness back to the present.
