Frequently Asked Questions

Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths, unintentional injuries, and hospital admissions for trauma. Even "minor" falls can lead to a fear of falling in older adults, causing them to limit their activity and lose their strength. And when those patients are in a state of disuse combined with their sedentary lifestyle, the CNS adapts and they lose even more mobility.

This ALL leads to more risk of a fall.

This becomes the vicious cycle of a fall — your patient falls, they become fearful of falling again, they become inactive, their muscles weaken and their risk for falls increases. Even if your patient has only fallen once, they are at much higher chance of falling again and again...

Do you know how to stop the cycle?

Additionally, what if your patients are falling but not telling you? More than half of your patients aren't telling you they've fallen, so you need to be able to predict the fall before it has even happened.

Lastly, we must encourage all caregivers and clinicians to be involved to minimize the risk factors before the fall happens.

If you aren't trained to properly screen, assess, and intervene with your patients, they are more likely to be at risk of falling and further causing damage, allowing the cycle of falling to continue.

There are so many factors to ascertain whether your patient is at risk of falling. This course will cover each of these key pieces to the fall prevention puzzle in detail. Learn more about the CDC's STEADI initiative.

Gait is often associated with fall risk within the rehab community and this course covers evidence-based exercises, activities, and treatment strategies that can directly impact not only gait, but everyday function, mobility, and safety for your patients.

Asking the right questions while you're assessing any new older adult patient or a patient with a higher risk of falling is key to helping all of your patients. Dig deep into their answers — are they unsteady when standing or walking; worried about falling; have they fallen?

You'll understand risk factors that you may not have been assessing for prior: vitamin D deficiency, medications linked to falls, vision impairment, home hazards. You can also get a pocket guide for STEADI so you'll always have the right answer at your fingertips.
