Course Description:

Behaviors such as dementia, aggression, anxiety and depression, wandering, refusal of food and fluids, and inappropriate sexual advances pose significant barriers to the delivery of essential health care. If older adults are routinely under your care, then you are well-aware of the disruptive nature of these challenging geriatric behaviors. This seminar will offer you innovative and practical approaches to managing the disruptive behaviors frequently associated with aging, while maintaining the patient's dignity within a climate of respect and empathy.

Join Anne Thomas, an experienced gerontological and adult nurse practitioner, for this broad-based, practical and insightful program. Through interesting case studies and stimulating, interactive discussion, Anne will guide you through an information-packed day that will provide you with innovative approaches to caring for your patients with challenging geriatric behaviors.

 

Objectives:

  1. Understand mechanisms used to assess baseline behaviors in older adults.
  2. List the difficult behaviors frequently elicited in seniors and be able to select appropriate interventions.
  3. Describe the signs and symptoms of the various dementias, including Alzheimer's Disease, and how they relate to difficult geriatric behaviors.
  4. Recognize the unique challenges that family caregivers of the elderly face in order to be better prepared to offer assistance to the family.
  5. Identify causes of an escalation in physically aggressive behaviors and explain strategies the caregiver can use to remedy the situation.
  6. Identify the differences between delirium, dementia and depression in the elderly.
  7. Explain helpful tips and techniques that promote nutritional intake in the elderly patient who has been refusing food.
  8. Reflect on case study learning to establish new strategies and interventions for challenging geriatric behaviors.
  9. Identify resources for healthcare professionals and clients that can be used when caring for challenging older patients.

Anne Thomas is the Dean of a School of Nursing in the Midwest. She has been a clinically-active adult/gerontological nurse practitioner for over 25 years and is frequently involved with the care of elder patients exhibiting challenging behaviors.

Her extensive clinical experience includes positions in tertiary care, long-term care facilities, rural health clinics, private practices and community-based centers. Dr. Thomas has published in peer-reviewed journals and holds leadership positions in several national nursing organizations. Her area of research interest is health care decision-making, particularly with older adults with chronic illness.
