Description

Gaber Mate, M.D. presents a unique approach to resolving trauma through what he calls “compassionate inquiry,” which is an integration of an ancient meditation approach with a modern understanding of human psychology. Through a series of empathic questions that facilitate the client’s own curiosity at what lies beneath what the client presents to the world, Mate unveils the level of consciousness, mental climate, hidden assumptions, implicit memories and body states that form the real message that words both express and disguise.

Dr. Mate suggests that trauma is involved in all human dysfunction, addiction, disease, and confusion which is separation from the self.  Various symptoms often found in the DSM Manual manifest this separation.  Therapeutic interaction needs to help a person reconnect with themselves so that innate wisdom will assist in this reconnection.  When the client can find what is in the way of self-connection, natural solutions emerge.  How the disconnection shows up in the present moment becomes the focus of the therapy rather than the past story.  By interrupting the story and history telling and asking compassionate questions, the client is guided to the truth that will provide liberation from suffering.

Using “fierce” compassion Mate demonstrates how to guide clients in the present moment to painful places so that the client becomes aware of the presence of disconnection and what to do with it.  When clients develop a deep awareness through an interactive process where the therapist brings an intense presence and responds intuitively to the client, change occurs.

Rather than being in conflict with the self, the client can learn to be in the moment in a deep connection and acceptance.  What is true for the person in the moment is the right place to be.  Rather than transforming the self, being open to the moment, the client’s depth transforms experience into joy, peace, passion, and vitality.  Through deep curiosity and listening in kindness, empathy, and understanding, change gently occurs.
