Description

Despite the introduction of technology, children spend 60% of their school time handwriting.

Impaired motor issues can hinder neurotypical children’s ability to write and complete fine motor coordination tasks required to be successful in day-to-day activities. These are even more exacerbated by children with disabilities.

Problems associated with handwriting can influence a child’s academic confidence, self-efficacy, and motivation for learning.

While handwriting is treated in different ways, therapists sometimes resort to expensive products which may show minimal efficacy. Specific programs target different objectives; therefore, taking a more holistic approach to handwriting may have a stronger impact on actual performance. Addressing handwriting from a child-centered approach using sensorimotor and motor learning (from items already in your toolbox) can be just as effective.

Robyn Otty, OTD covers the recent literature findings, shares useful tools and strategies, and creative fun ways to build a child’s handwriting performance!
