Many clinicians working with clients with Complex PTSD and dissociative disorders believe that standard IFS therapy is all that is needed and other resources in the trauma world need not be utilized. Sometimes therapists who are highly experienced in IFS therapy can exacerbate clients’ symptomology and their ability to function by using this modality as a stand-alone therapy. This talk outlines some issues that arise for clients with trauma and dissociation from using IFS therapy in a non-trauma informed manner. The need for coping skills for clients is outlined and a few of these are discussed. This presentation spotlights the invalidation that client’s parts may feel if they are being categorized into rigid roles of Self, fire fighters, managers, or exiles by therapists. Three phases of trauma therapy outlined by International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation are discussed as well as how they correlate to the phases of IFS therapy.

Karen Harrington, MCouns., MHealSci., is a licensed counsellor and certified IFS therapist. She has a background in mental health nursing in inpatient and community settings. Karen has a private practice and an interest in working with people with childhood trauma and dissociative experiences. She has a passion for disseminating the IFS model in New Zealand at a grass roots level and started to co-facilitate introductory workshops in early 2023 with Helen Foot. Karen lives in Christchurch, New Zealand with her husband, Greg, and they particularly enjoy catching up with their adult sons and their partners over good food and competitive canasta games.
