Behaviors such as wandering, aggression and anxiety can pose significant barriers to the delivery of essential care. Geriatric syndromes such malnutrition, dehydration and insomnia can diminish quality of life and threaten independence. OBJECTIVES

  • Develop strategies to manage difficult behaviors in seniors who have an altered perception of reality.
  • Explain why wandering occurs in individuals with cognitive impairment and develop strategies to minimize or redirect this behavior.
  • Describe the environmental and behavioral causes of agitation.
  • Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate sexual behaviors in individuals with dementia.
  • Distinguish between normal sleeping patterns and bedtime issues which could lead to increased health problems.
  • Analyze the physical and psychological changes that affect an elder’s desire and ability to eat including the changes in nutritional requirements.
  • Identify the signs of caregiver stress and develop intervention strategies to prevent burnout.

Lisa Byrd, PhD, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, Gerontologist Related seminars and products


Lisa Byrd, PhD, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, Gerontologist, has many years of experience working with the geriatric population by diagnosing, treating, and intervening when problem behaviors occur. Dr. Byrd currently works as a Nurse Practitioner in private practice in a rural family practice clinic, as well as at nursing homes and an in-patient hospital unit-Acute Care of Elders (ACE) - a NICHE accredited unit for Senior care. She performs intake interviews, routine rounds, sick visits, annual history and physicals, medication reviews, and manages the behavioral problems of this geriatric population.

Lisa is a published author in peer-reviewed nursing/scientific journals. She is also the author of the books TOP 10 Geriatric Syndromes: Clinical Management Strategies (PESI, 2011) and Alzheimer's Disease: Prevention Strategies & Ways to Slow Progression (PESI, 2014). She is active in a number of professional organizations, and is the President of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA). She teaches geriatric nursing in an advanced practice nursing program, speaks locally as well as nationally, and is considered an expert in the field of geriatrics. Dr. Byrd has the experience and the knowledge to share with you how to successfully manage geriatric behavioral problems in elderly patients.
