Description

No prior knowledge or experience in Ericksonian approaches is needed for this level. Primary emphasis is upon elicitation of therapeutic trances, and ways to utilize these states in focused treatment. You will be able to begin to integrate hypnosis into your practice at the conclusion of the Fundamental Training.

Jeffrey Zeig, Ph.D. is the Founder and Director of Milton H. Erickson Foundation. Dr Zeig is the architect of The Evolution of Psychotherapy Conference, the Brief Therapy Conference, the Couples Conference, and the International Congresses on Ericksonian Approaches to Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. He is on the Editorial Board of numerous journals; Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 29, Psychotherapy); and Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He is a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academy of Practice in Psychology of the National Academies of Practice and an Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. A clinical psychologist, Dr. Zeig has a private practice, and conducts workshops internationally (40 countries). He has edited, co-edited, authored or coauthored more than 20 books on psychotherapy that appear in 12 foreign languages.

Brent B. Geary, Ph.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona. Since 1988, he has also been the Director of Training for the Milton H. Erickson Foundation. Dr. Geary has presented internationally on Ericksonian topics since 1991 and throughout most of the United States. He is coeditor of two books with Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph,D., The Handbook of Ericksonian Psychotherapy and The Letters of Milton H. Erickson.

Lilian Borges, MA, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor with more than 18 years of experience doing and teaching psychotherapy, Ericksonian hypnosis and brief therapy. She is an invited teacher at the Milton Erickson Foundation for their extensive hypnosis training programs. Lilian has been conducting seminars in the United States and internationally about couples therapy, and Ericksonian therapy.

Objectives

Week 1: Fundamentals of Hypnotic Induction: Observational Processes & The Language of Suggestion
  1. Present the roles of utilization and indirection in the context of the Ericksonian model of brief hypnotic psychotherapy.
  2. Utilize a variety of truisms as part of the hypnotic language patterns during hypnotic induction of clients.
  3. Communicate the primary ways the hypnotic constellation is used in hypnotic psychotherapy with clients.
Week 2: Fundamental Induction Continued: The Language of Suggestion
  1. Articulate specific reasons why indirect and permissive language is effective during the induction phase of hypnotic psychotherapy with clients.
  2. Appraise the use of the various dimensions of experience in which hypnotic subjects can be absorbed to facilitate the elicitation of trance during hypnotic psychotherapy.
Week 3: Hypnotic Phenomena
  1. Characterize the hypnotic phenomena according to their effect on creating, deleting, or distorting experiences for clients.
  2. Determine the manner in which age regression can be utilized in induction with clients to create experiences.
Week 4: Utilization
  1. Evaluate the ways clinicians can use “utilization” including incorporation, ratification, and positive attribution as the basis of therapeutic trance development with clients.
  2. Utilize characteristics and resistance in trance induction with clients during hypnotic psychotherapy.
Week 5: The Phenomenology of Hypnosis
  1. Utilize the phenomenological characteristics of hypnosis to advance trance with a hypnosis client.
  2. Analyze the ARE method of the Ericksonian Elicitation Model as it applies to hypnotic psychotherapy with clients.
Week 6: The Language of Hypnosis
  1. Analyze the role of indirect forms of language in facilitating responsiveness to hypnosis in clients.
  2. Implement paraverbal techniques to enhance the delivery of hypnotic communication during hypnotic psychotherapy.
Week 7: Indirection
  1. Provide a rationale for the utilization of indirect suggestion techniques in eliciting trace for therapeutic purposes.
  2. Utilize metaphors and anecdotes in story telling to help clients shift their perspective during hypnotic psychotherapy.
Week 8: Treatment Planning & Integration
  1. Communicate the indications and contradictions for the clinical use of hypnosis.
  2. Ascertain the importance of clinical supervision and/or consultation when utilizing hypnosis in psychotherapy.
