Dr. Tracey Long has been a practicing RN for 35 years and is a nursing professor teaching courses in medical Spanish, diabetes education, cultural competency, critical care and medical surgical nursing. She has been a Certified Diabetes Educator for 25 years and has formally taught hundreds of healthcare professionals to be ready to take the certification exam. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, she has worked in endocrinology.

One of her favorite activities is bringing nurses and healthcare professionals internationally each year to volunteer in medical clinics in Central and South America. She has a passion for active learning and as an international speaker and award-winning educator, Tracey helps nurses truly learn and apply the material to improve patient care.

Objectives

Lesson 1: How to Learn Spanish, Alphabet, and Cognates

• Employ common greetings in Spanish
• Catalogue components of language and strategies to learn a foreign language
• Formulate common Spanish cognates
• Utilize the Spanish alphabet

Lesson 2: Numbers and Nouns

• Integrate general cultural, physical and language considerations for Spanish-speaking clients into treatment to improve client level of functioning
• Employ comprehension of numbers for time, measurements and money
• Demonstrate the concept of gender for nouns

Lesson 3: Food, Clothes, and Admitting Questions

• Perform Spanish vocabulary for food & clothing
• Utilize patient admission questions in Spanish
• Execute yes/no questions in a clinical setting

Lesson 4: Parts of the Body and Verb Conjugation

• Formulate basic anatomical terms in Spanish
• Demonstrate proper use of pronouns
• Apply conjugation rules for three basic verb forms: AR, ER and IR

Lesson 5: Colors and Physical Assessment Questions

• Distinguish and pronounce colors
• Utilize yes/no questions practically, in session with clients
• Compose physical assessment questions for the neurological system

Lesson 6: Family, Irregular Verbs, and the Integumentary System

• Perform Spanish vocabulary for family members
• Utilize irregular verbs: ir, tener, querer with proper conjugation
• Employ Spanish vocabulary words to describe the integumentary system

Lesson 7: Ser/Estar and Respiratory System

• Integrate prefixes, suffixes and possessives to expand Spanish vocabulary
• Demonstrate the proper uses of ser and estar
• Practice scenarios for clients with respiratory issues

Lesson 8: Hobbies, Directions, CV System, and Diagnostic Tests

• Utilize vocabulary for hobbies
• Demonstrate vocabulary for medical tests and settings
• Dramatize scenarios for the cardiovascular system

Lesson 9: Telling Time and the Gastrointestinal System

• Utilize Spanish vocabulary to calculate time to improve client engagement
• Apply Spanish vocabulary to describe the calendar
• Practice vocabulary for gastrointestinal system

Lesson 10: Quick Phrases, Emotions, Professions, and the Genitourinary System

• Employ quick Spanish phrases that can be put to practical use in-session
• Utilize various words/phrases for emotions and professions in Spanish
• Construct a physical assessment of the genitourinary system with Spanish terms

Lesson 11: Animals, Opposites, and the Musculoskeletal System  

• Perform correct pronunciation of Spanish vocabulary for animals
• Practice proper pronunciation of Spanish vocabulary for opposites
• Dramatize scenarios for the musculoskeletal systems

Lesson 12: Medical Equipment, Specialists, and the Reproductive System

• Practice Spanish vocabulary related to the reproductive system
• Conduct Spanish conversation regarding typical health care equipment
• Utilize proper terms for medical specialists in relation to client assessment and treatment planning

Lesson 13: Gustar- like Verbs, Vital Signs, Patient Hygiene, and Administering Medications

• Utilize the verb gustar properly with clients
• Appraise client hygiene and nutrition
• Employ Spanish vocabulary while taking vital signs
• Complete the administration of medications in Spanish

Lesson 14: Reflexive Verbs and Assessment Questions

• Choose and utilize reflexive Spanish verbs
• Utilize Spanish vocabulary common in prescriptions and clinical settings

Lesson 15: Body Language, Cultural Competence, and Complementary Alternative Medicine
