Description

Individuals experiencing persistent pain will interact with numerous healthcare professionals and disciplines as they seek to “eliminate” or “fix” the pain. What the patient values in treatment specialties and what medical professionals view as needed steps are not necessarily one in the same. Thus, treating chronic pain in a fragmented medical culture is a challenge. Furthermore, chronic pain is a complex clinical problem that is best addressed from a biopsychosocial model that often fails in service availability and delivery. Now what? Beliefs about pain treatment and expectation of results must be examined not just from the patient perspective, but also the medical provider. The clinical path associated with chronic pain, the hierarchy of who controls treatment and outcome will be examined from the biopsychosocial perspective in which viewers will gain perspective in psychological considerations of the pain experience and treatment.
