Children with Sensory Processing Disorders, ADHD or autism have much in common. They are challenged with physical problems that affect their ability to focus and can also cause them to be emotionally reactive. Children who have trouble self-regulating throughout the day are missing out on typical childhood experiences in school, on the playground and with their families. They have difficulty making and keeping friends.
This workshop looks at the underlying factors of poor self-regulation and how they affect the child. The course emphasizes practical interventions! You will walk away with details on how to create simple but effective programs in clinical, school and home settings:
Clinical programs such as Interactive Metronome®, Sound Therapy, and Neuro-Feedback will be discussed, as will timely topics such as medication vs. non-medication for ADHD and the bio-medical approach controversy in autism. You will receive written handouts and a list of resources.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Karen Lea Hyche, OTD, OTR /L, is an occupational therapist specializing in sensory processing disorders, autism and learning disabilities She currently works at the Arc of Walker County in Jasper, Alabama where she provides early intervention and outpatient pediatric therapy. She is a member of the Alabama Early Intervention ICC and serves as the financial chair. She also serves as a fieldwork instructor for the OTA program at Wallace State Community College. Previous experience includes public schools and psychiatric settings with children birth to 18. Karen is certified through Western Psychological Services for instruction and administration of the Sensory Integration Praxis Test. She is an ILS service provider. Karen is the co-author of Classroom Strategies for children with ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder and Autism.

Karen Lea Hyche, OTD, OTR/L, is an occupational therapist with over twenty years specializing in sensory processing disorders, autism and learning disabilities. She is the owner of Hyche Center for Sensory & Motor Learning, in Jasper, Alabama, an occupational therapy clinic serving children (birth-16 years) with a variety of diagnoses including, but not limited to, developmental delays, learning disabilities, sensory processing disorder, visual-perceptual deficits, poor handwriting, feeding difficulties and autism.
Dr. Hyche served as the occupational therapist in two Jasper county public schools for four years working with children from preschool through high school. She continues to serve as a consultant for the public schools, as needed. Her experience includes providing psychiatric care for children (birth-18 years) while working at a psychiatric hospital. She is a member of the Alabama Early Intervention ICC and serves as the financial chair. Dr. Hyche serves as a fieldwork instructor for the OTA program at Wallace State Community College.
