In this 32-hour Series 100 (consisting of four 8-hour courses), we will dive into the fascinating field of interpersonal neurobiology which synthesizes a range of sciences to explore what the human mind is and how we can cultivate mental health in our lives. Moving beyond the basic principles in published texts, this course enables you to explore these interwoven ideas through a range of interactive and experiential exercises that illuminate the nature of integration and the connections among mind, brain, and relationships.  We’ll explore how science can illuminate the nature of our inner subjective lives and the importance of our interpersonal relationships. We’ll discover how the brain and our relationships interact to shape our mental lives—and what we can do in our personal and professional lives to strengthen the mind.  Come join Dr. Siegel in this exciting journey into the inner and interpersonal nature of what it means to be human and live with meaning, compassion, and connection! For a detailed description of the four courses that comprise Series 100, please see below.

MOL 101: IPNB from the Inside Out: An Overview of Interpersonal Neurobiology

In this course we’ll dive into an overview of interpersonal neurobiology (“IPNB”). We'll explore in-depth this exciting interdisciplinary field, reviewing the core aspects of the mind, the embodied brain, and our interpersonal relationships. We’ll examine the practical applications that emerge from the central concept of integration—the linkage of differentiated elements with one another. The course also provides strategies for intervention, including how we focus our attention and communicate effectively within relationships to promote integration in the brain itself.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Explore in-depth this exciting new interdisciplinary field, reviewing the core aspects of the mind, the embodied brain, and our interpersonal relationships.
  • Discuss the practical applications that emerge from the central concept of integration—the linkage of differentiated elements with one another
  • Examine a wide range of accessible domains of integration, evaluate their degrees of integration, organize strategies for intervention, and carry out specific changes in how we focus the mind and communicate within relationships to promote integration in the brain itself
  • Define the mind.
  • Recall how the regulatory process of mind unveils the importance of monitoring and modifying energy and information flow.
  • Describe how information arises from energy patterns.
  • Analyze the ways in which energy and information flow through the body and as shared in relationships influences mental life.
  • Examine how integrative communication is the basis for healthy relationships.

MOL 102: Brain Fitness: Mindsight Skill Training and the Brain

In this course we’ll discuss how whole brain integration is essential for well-being and explore practical experiential exercises that can help cultivate neural integration with the focus of your attention.  You’ll be able to try out the fundamental “Wheel of Awareness” practice and dive deeply into its application and then explore the ways it can help promote the first of a series of domains, the integration of consciousness. We’ll review the neural correlates of these skill-based practices and the ways in which mindfulness, mentalization, theory of mind, mind-mindedness and metacognition contrast and compare to mindsight.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss how the wheel of awareness practice helps focus the mind in important ways.
  • List the 9 domains of integration and identify how they contribute to mental health.
  • Examine practical experiences in cultivating attention.
  • Explore how awareness plays a role in education and psychotherapy.
  • Examine how repeated practice strengthens circuits in the brain.
  • Explain how mental training alters gene expression.
  • Identify how the brain can be changed by the mind.
  • Recognize how the regularity of practice influences neuroplasticity.

MOL 103 - IPNB and Relationships: The Neurobiology of We

In this course we’ll explore how relationships influence the brain and the brain influences relationships and review the highlights of both child and adult attachment research. We’ll examine the nature of couples’ therapy and family functioning as we discover the importance of a “soul friend” and “feeling felt”. Examining the neural correlates of interpersonal attunement and resonance, we’ll have the opportunity to explore mirror neurons, the “resonance circuits,” affect regulation, neural systems theory, and social neuroscience as we apply modern conceptualizations to child development, education, psychotherapy, and relational well-being.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • List the different categories of attachment.
  • Explain the neural correlates of attunement.
  • Recognize how mirror neurons influence our relationships.
  • Explain and how “sense of self” does not have to be limited to the body.
  • Explore how relationships are shaped by early attachment histories.
  • Examine how each form of attachment influences the capacity for future closeness.
  • Analyze how child and adult categories of attachment interact.
  • Discuss how attachment categories are open to change.

MOL 104 - IPNB for Psychotherapists: The Mindful Therapist

In this course we’ll learn how mindsight can make you a more effective therapist as we examine an IPNB view of therapy, from the inside out. Moving beyond what the book The Mindful Therapist offers, come join us as we explore, through experiential exercises, how presence, attunement, and resonance form the beginning stages of what leads to trust, truth, and transformation (three among a dozen “TR” words we’ll be exploring). Moving deeply into the process of therapeutic change, we’ll learn about the conceptual model, “the plane of possibility,” and how it combines modern thinking about quantum theory with practical applications to a range of psychotherapeutic situations. This course will further develop the essential elements at the heart of therapeutic presence and the empathic abilities that are the essence of effective therapy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss how the plane of possibility helps conceptualize mind and matter.

  • Integrate experiential exercises involving various awareness techniques to focus the mind.

  • Recognize the dozen “TR” words and their importance to being a more effective therapist.
  • Explain how mindfulness enhances psychotherapy.
  • Identify the three forms of mindfulness.
  • Explain the conditions that have been proven to be helped with mindfulness
  • Describe the neural correlates of the mindfulness practice.
  • Explain how mindfulness may influence epigenetic control.
