Description

This workshop demonstrates how to create and use visual tools for working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We start with creating simple tools such as visual schedules and first-then boards, and then look at inexpensive commercial apps that provide similar functionality. Next, we discuss how to make picture stories, as well as stories that teach both rules and lessons. This is followed by a review of commercial apps for authoring stories for children with ASD. Finally, we look at four different methods of utilizing video as a way to increase functional and positive behavior skills. We cover the entire process of making each of these types of videos, using pre-taped video clips as examples.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Teresa Garland, MOT, OTR/L, is an OT specializing in sensory and modulation issues. She has worked in schools, sensory clinics and medical settings with children ages 3 – 17, treating children with sensory processing disorders, ADHD and autism. Ms. Garland works closely with psychologists, speech therapists, teachers and doctors to understand and treat underlying sensory, timing, and coordination/ motor planning issues. She is trained/certified in the SIPT, Interactive Metronome®, Integrated Listening Systems (iLs), Therapeutic Listening, Wilbarger’s Sensory Defensiveness, and Food Chaining. She has written case studies for Interactive Metronome® and writes a blog called OT and Self-Regulation at http://otselfregulation.blogspot.com/.
