Offer your clients breakthrough healing from the pain of complex trauma…and earn your Certificate in Treating Complex Trauma with Internal Family Systems.

Complex trauma wreaks havoc on your client’s emotions, causing conflict between the various internal “parts” that clients find within themselves, often resulting in toxic behaviors and unpredictable outbursts that challenge even the most seasoned clinician.

In order to help clients heal, clinicians need a scientifically validated approach that understands these “parts” and can work deep within the client, beyond the reach of standard talk therapy models.

Fortunately, after decades of clinical breakthroughs and scientific research, clinicians now have the proven Internal Family Systems (IFS) model that’s effective at healing even the most difficult complex trauma.

Hailed by the world’s leading trauma authority, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, as the "treatment method all clinicians should know," this powerful approach can accelerate the healing of complex trauma — providing lasting relief for your clients in a shorter period of time.

Now you can join Dr. Frank Anderson, psychiatrist, author, and vice chair of the Foundation for Self Leadership — the leading organization dedicated to advancing the IFS model through research and training — as he guides you step by step through the revolutionary and transformative IFS approach through real-life, in-session videos and in-depth experiential training sessions.

You'll also get exclusive insight into how neuroscience can inform why, how and what IFS techniques you should use to maximize your clinical outcomes — so you'll know exactly how to empower your clients to overcome even the most complex traumas.

You'll end this course prepared to start integrating Internal Family Systems with your current clinical models, plus you’ll earn your Certificate in Treating Complex Trauma with Internal Family Systems.

Earn your Certificate in Treating Complex Trauma with Internal Family Systems...

You've likely heard your clients explain their feelings of conflicting emotions — "a part of me wants to…and then there’s a part of me that doesn’t…” as they grapple with their internal "Self," desires, and behaviors. In IFS, the idea of multiplicity of the mind is normal. Every part has a good intention, and every part has value. Even for trauma survivors.

In the treatment of trauma, IFS is different from traditional phase-oriented treatments. Instead of starting with building resources in clients before processing traumatic memories, it welcomes extreme symptoms from the onset, learns about their positive protective intentions and gets their permission to access the traumatic wounds. While both traditional attachment focused therapies and IFS value the therapeutic relationship, IFS additionally supports the relationship between the client’s Self and their part as the primary healing agent.

Nearly all clients with a trauma history have innate abilities that help them improve their mental health if they listen to their parts. In this comprehensive IFS training, you’ll learn how to help clients listen to and understand their conflicting parts to master their emotions. Through engaging case studies, in-session demonstrations, and masterfully presented lectures, Dr. Anderson will show you step-by-step how to apply the most effective, empirically validated IFS interventions to help the clients in your practice find deep, lasting healing.

Module 1
Treating the Various Types of Trauma

What makes trauma treatment challenging? The extreme reactions and emotions associated with it. From desperation to connection to total rejection. Or from rage cutting to suicide to dissociation.

In this first module, you'll begin by exploring how IFS approaches the various types of trauma, including single incident trauma, PTSD or chronic trauma, complex or relational trauma, developmental trauma and extreme or dissociative identity disorder (DID).

Module 2
The Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model

In Module 2, you'll learn how you can use IFS to accelerate the healing of traumatic wounds through its non-pathologizing approach rooted in neuroscience.

You'll join Frank as he guides you through the multiplicity of the mind and the importance of your client's protective responses. You'll then explore the origins, goals, and assumptions that make up the foundation of this powerful model and discover how IFS differs from traditional phase-oriented treatment approaches.

Module 3
Symptoms as "Parts of the Self"

All of us have a core "Self" that contains crucial leadership qualities such as perspective, confidence, compassion, and acceptance.

In this module, you'll learn how to help your clients access their inner Self and use these positive resources to heal trauma. You'll take a deep dive into the 8 qualities of Self, when to use compassion and when to use empathy in your treatment plans, and how to differentiate Parts from Self.

Module 4
Managing Common Co-Morbidities

In Module 4, you'll discover how IFS translates common co-morbidities of trauma into parts language, showing a non-pathological perspective on mental health disorders that can be more effective for helping clients.

Discover how co-morbidities act as protective responses to trauma. You'll also learn when to use (and not use) medication to improve your treatment outcomes. Finally, you'll see what the data says about treating co-morbidities by exploring the IFS complex trauma study.

Module 5
The IFS Technique Step-by-Step

In this module, Dr. Anderson will offer a step-by-step breakdown of applying IFS to your clinical sessions.

You'll learn the roles of emotions, pain, and trauma within a person and how to work with common client reactions to trauma such as substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, obsessing, conflict avoidance, binging, cutting and more. Finally, you'll discover how to identify and access the "core Self" within the client that holds the capacity for lasting healing.

Module 6
How Neuroscience Informs Your Therapeutic Decisions

In Module 6, you'll explore the neurological processes behind trauma. More than just the "whats and whys," you'll also learn the "hows" of actual treatment — so you'll know exactly what tools and strategies to use to help improve your client's clinical outcomes.

You'll also explore top-down and bottom-up strategies for trauma treatment, when it's necessary to take over and "be the auxiliary brain" for your clients, and easy, at home strategies your clients can use to help accelerate healing.

Module 5
Working with Attachment Disorders and Trauma

In this powerful session, you'll explore how to think about Attachment Disorders through the IFS framework and discover a transformative way to help heal relational violations and attachment issues.

You'll learn why you need to trust the client's internal relationship to heal their traumatic wounds. You'll also explore tools and strategies for healing relational wounds of childhood, and how to work with preverbal trauma.

Module 5
IFS In-Session Demonstration

See Dr. Anderson masterfully use the IFS approach in a powerful, live, 50-minute demonstration. Following the demonstration, you'll hear him answer questions about his work and further explain the nuts-and-bolts of his decision making throughout the session.

Module 5
How to Integrate IFS into Your Treatment Approach

Many therapists are successfully adapting IFS to different therapy populations and modalities. In this final module, you'll discover how you can safely and easily use the IFS framework with other powerful modalities such as EMDR, DBT, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and more.

You'll also explore common roadblocks to treating trauma and how you can use IFS to keep therapy moving forward.
