Trauma often has a profound and amplified impact on autistic individuals, shaped by their unique sensory, social, and emotional processing differences.
Misunderstanding or misinterpreting these dynamics can complicate the therapeutic process—and may even unintentionally cause harm.
As a clinician, are you confident that your client’s meltdowns, emotional struggles, or aggressive behaviors stem from autism itself—or could they be responses to deeply internalized trauma, social exclusion, or abuse?
Your all-star panel of experts includes:
- Temple Grandin – Author of 10+ books on autism and 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award winner
- Barry Prizant - Author of Uniquely Human and Uniquely Human: The Podcast
- Jed Baker - Award-winning author of numerous books; director of the Social Skills Training Project
- Sean Inderbitzen – Author of popular, Autism in Polyvagal Terms
- Deb Dana – Pioneer in polyvagal theory-informed work with trauma survivors

Join Dr. Price, author of Unmasking Autism and the forthcoming Unmasking for Life, as he shares his personal journey discovering and embracing an Autistic identity. We'll explore the major gains that the Autistic community has made in public acceptance and improved accessibility in the last decade, and then outline a vision for neurodiverse justice that is rooted in the ideals of liberation, autonomy, and authenticity. Alternative models of accessing care, accommodations, and community will be explored, as will alternative paradigms for approaching neurodiversity, beyond pathology or psychiatric models.
Please note: CE hours are not offered for this session
Autistic individuals often experience events that are traumatizing such as abuse, bullying, rejection, humiliation, and loss. These factors highlight the importance of including screening for traumatic experiences in autism evaluations.
Drs. Aspy and Grossman will expertly guide you through:
- Strategies to assess for a history of significant stressors and traumatic events
- Skilled use of self-report data to differentiate and uncover history of trauma and overcome overreliance on observation data
- Differential diagnosis
- Strategies to address effects of trauma
- Prevention of further traumatization caused by the assessment process
Join Drs. Goldstein and Inderbitzen as they introduce an overview of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), the evidence base for SP in traumatized autistic clients, illustrate applications of somatic resourcing through exercises and video demonstrations, and guide you through Sensorimotor Psychotherapy's PEACE Protocol's five steps to modulate activation and build resilience.
Dr. Baker will guide you through both the science of exposure-based treatment and the art of applying these strategies to autistic clients who can often be resistant to treatment to address their anxiety issues. Strategies for both highly verbal and less verbal autistic individuals will be demonstrated through multiple case studies.
Embracing polyvagal theory as a framework for people allows us to consider the nervous system present in the therapy room. Interpersonal Neurobiology Authors, pioneer Deb Dana LCSW, and Sean Inderbitzen LCSW, DSW, have a dialogue about atypical sensation presentation as a reflection of the nervous system.

The therapy room can be a space for autistic individuals to explore their needs, how they experience the world, work toward self-discovery, build self-compassion and emerge with confidence to live life in full color with an autistic identity.
In this session, you’ll learn concrete strategies drawn for Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapies to help autistic clients spark a sense of self-compassion. We will begin with a dive into autistic identity and end with techniques that you can integrate into your therapy sessions immediately after.
It is now well accepted that autistic and neurodivergent individuals are at high risk for experiencing trauma. Many factors, such as the physical environment and the behavior of other people and may contribute to highly stressful and traumatic experiences across different settings. Join Dr. Prizant as we consider risk factors that may result in stressful and even traumatic experiences, and preventative strategies based on supporting emotional regulation that support trusting relationships and quality of life.
Dr. Lyons will guide you through innovative strategies and interventions that leverage AI and the Metaverse to enhance social trauma support for autistic clients. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and therapeutic techniques, you’ll learn how to create immersive environments that promote social skills, emotional regulation, and community building, ultimately transforming the therapeutic landscape for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Join Drs. Platzman and Levine as they guide you through the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) toolkit—developed by autistic self-advocates—which provides the field feedback on what is ethical and what is not. Using the ASANs toolkit as a guide, we’ll look at:
- Many common practices within autism related services and supports that have serious ethical concerns
- Way to provide ethical services to ensure we are operating at the highest ethical level possible, looking through the lens of autistic self-advocates
This session is in part based on the ASAN toolkit entitled, "For Whose Benefit: Evidence, Ethics, and Effectiveness of Autism Interventions".
Drawing on his approach from his latest book, Child Medication Fact Book for Psychiatric Practice, Second Edition, Dr. Josh Feder will guide you through all the steps you might try before resorting to antipsychotic medications to reduce client struggles with irritability, anxiety, aggression, depression, ADHD, and sleep.
From non-pharmacological approaches to supplements, milder medications, and, if you need them, how to monitor for the side effects of antipsychotics and reduce some of the side effects, you'll be ready to match the interventions with the needs and values of autistic clients and their families.
