Mary Jo Harwood, MSW. LSW
Mary Jo Harwood, MSW, LSW, is a licensed social worker in Pennsylvania. A significant part of her 28 years as a social worker has been spent working with traumatized individuals and groups in the capacity of a therapist, crisis responder and trauma trainer. Her teaching of the neurobiology of trauma is often described as “a practical application of the theory that guides recovery and healing”. Mary Jo’s presentation style blends humor and anecdotal examples to content-heavy material, making learning and application stimulating and enjoyable.
Mary Jo spent the past 16 years on the executive leadership team of the Center for Victims of Violence and Crime (CVVC) in Pittsburgh, PA., a victim service organization serving over 10,000 clients annually. During her tenure with CVVC, her responsibilities included clinical oversight of the therapy department, and leadership and coordination of the crisis response team. As training chair, for the Keystone Crisis Intervention Team, she was instrumental in developing and delivering trauma trainings across the state of Pennsylvania. In addition, Mary Jo served on the Homeland Security Crime Victim’s Response Committee for the state of Pennsylvania, post 9/11.
Mary Jo’s crisis and clinical experience includes local, state and national response to incidents of mass casualty. She has trained nationally and internationally on the impact of trauma. In 2011, as a member of Mediators Beyond Borders International, Mary Jo worked with Child Soldiers of Liberia, teaching them about the impacts of trauma and assisting them with reintegration of tribes torn apart by civil war. Her expertise in trauma recovery has been used in numerous newspaper articles, radio and television news reports. She is a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and the National Center for Crisis Management. Mary Jo is currently the sole proprietor of Resilience Resource, LLC.
