Robert L. Karol, PhD, LP, ABPP, CBIST


Robert L. Karol, Ph.D., L.P., ABPP, CBIST, is president of a multidisciplinary group private practice, Karol Neuropsychological Services & Consulting, and he specializes in counseling for persons with brain injury and other disabilities, neuropsychological and rehabilitation evaluations, program development consultation for organizations, workshops & staff training, and case consultation for providers, insurers, and attorneys. He is also Vice President of Brain Injury Services for Mission Healthcare which provides long-term care and assisted living facilities for more than 1300 residents, offering specialty programs such as brain injury treatment, transitional care, memory care, and ventilator care at its 14 facilities throughout Minnesota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Dr. Karol has worked in rehabilitation for over 29 years and has founded a psychology department, started an outpatient brain injury adjustment program, co-chaired a spinal cord injury committee achieving CARF accreditation, was department chair of a psychology/neuropsychology service, growing it to 13 staff across two hospitals, and was director of a multidisciplinary, CARF accredited, brain injury service expanding it to two units with four service lines and 32 beads, overseeing multidisciplinary therapy staff, nursing, social work, etc.

He has authored three books: Overcoming Grief and Loss after Brain Injury (Oxford University Press, 2011), and Therapists' Guide to Overcoming Grief and Loss after Brain Injury (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Neuropsychosocial Intervention: The Practical Brain Injury (CRC Press, 2003). He is currently working on a fourth book.

He co-founded the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota, serving on its Board of Directors for 14 years and he is a past chairman of the board. He has advised, consulted, or been on the board of group home providers, vocational programs, chemical health programs, and correctional facilities. He has advised the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the Minnesota Department of Corrections, and the Supreme Court of Minnesota Board of Law Examiners. He has also served on three Minnesota Psychological Association committees including Payor Committee, Statewide Referral Service Advisory Committee, and Hospital/Medical Psychology Committee. Dr. Karol is Board Certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) as a Rehabilitation Psychologist and is certified by the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) as a Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer (CBIST).
